Well true to my word I did my first experiments on 1.2GHz DD over the past week. They were a dismal failure.

The repeater just wouldn’t answer, nothing seemed to work. I knew my packets were being transmitted, but nothing was coming back. While discussing this problem with one of the hardware guys, he asked a revealing question: “What frequency did you program repeater module to?” My response: “I thought you programmed it.” This was a good clue about what the problem was!

So I scheduled some time to head out to the site today, and Tom N0VPR came out with me this morning. We worked on installing a nice 1U keyboard / trackpad / lcd combination. We had to rearrange the repeater a small amount to make it fit, but it’s a great solution should we ever need to do console work on the gateway. It was 3 well spent hours.

While Tom ran out for some mounting hardware, I took the oppertunity and connected my laptop to the repeater module. Low and behold it was unprogrammed. A few keystrokes later and the module learned what frequency it should be listening on. Things were finally setup as they should be.

I’m still not able to establish a connection to the gateway, but at least the repeater is now answering me when I send out packets. 1 step at a time.
